Bio-Design Project
Re/Marmor
reimagine marble
Marble stone is always a popular choice used globally in interior architecture, but is it a truly sustainable material? In the commercial sector, the lifespan of each interior space is estimated to last only five years, while the stone can take millions to billions of years to form.
The first bio-marble making by
human & non-human.
Re/Marmor, the bio-marble is challenging the notion of luxury and the material's ‘purpose and value’.
The material prototype shows how we can make bio-marble with Cyanobacteria, aka. Blue-green algae. The project is underdeveloped yet has very high potential.
Circular Material
Through researching more about the marble industry, 53% of carving out and disturbing the ecology is disregarded and often sent straight to the landfill. However shutting down the business is not a reality that can happen, so this Re/Marmor is offering the real transition towards no need for destruction of our nature, yet still reserve the business and craftmanship to stay alive.
Once any Re/Marmor meets the end of its use, it can be demolished but collected and reused again and again. The pigment will be naturally made from whether byproduct or a microorganism like bacteria. The shape can be remade into various forms, on-demand to reserve the craftmanship work in this fast moving world.
